Nomad "cannot add cellular plan" error on iPhone
Symptom
When scanning the Nomad QR code on iPhone, iOS throws "Cellular Plan Cannot Be Added" or the activation hangs at "Activating…" indefinitely. The QR code looks valid but the device can't complete installation.
Likely causes
- Apple's activation servers are unreachable (rare; check Apple's system status page).
- The device is carrier-locked.
- The eSIM slot is already filled with the maximum number of profiles (iPhone XS/XR cap at 1 eSIM stored; newer iPhones store more but only one or two are active).
- Network connectivity (Wi-Fi or cellular on another line) is required during activation and was lost mid-install.
Step-by-step fix
- 1Connect to a stable Wi-Fi network before retrying.
- 2Settings → Cellular → remove an unused eSIM profile to free space.
- 3Reboot the device.
- 4If the QR code still fails, retrieve the activation details (SM-DP+ address + activation code) from the Nomad app and enter them manually via Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → Enter Details Manually.
- 5If activation still hangs, contact Nomad support and request a new code.
